Promoting positive gender norms and socialization

Refers to supporting parents and caregivers, front-line workers and girls and boys throughout the life course with resources and opportunities to address discriminatory gender dynamics within households and to create positive, nurturing households that are gender responsive. Such support includes building awareness and skills of parents and caregivers and training of front-line workers; encouraging male caregiving through community engagement and social and behavior change strategies; and ending gender-based violence and physical discipline to create nurturing household environments. At a broader level, it also includes strengthening engagement with governments and the private sector to influence parental policies, social protection programmes, service delivery systems, positive gender norms, and workplace polices that are gender responsive and family friendly.

Guiding questions and considerations

1.

What resources and opportunities can be effectively provided to parents, caregivers, front-line workers, girls, and boys to address discriminatory gender dynamics within households?

2.

What strategies (e.g., community engagement) can be implemented to create positive and nurturing gender-transformative household environments, and encourage male caregiving and active involvement in the household?

3.

What specific awareness-building initiatives and skill-building programmes are needed to empower parents and caregivers to address gender dynamics within their households?

4.

What measures can be taken/what challenges can be addressed to end gender-based violence and physical discipline within households and create safer, more nurturing environments for all family members?

5.

How can engagement between governments and the private sector be strengthened to advocate for inclusive parenting policies, programmes and services that promote gender equality and support to families, including families of children with developmental delays and disabilities?
